Raymond Van Mil on how to make party portraits shine.

Nightlife connoisseur, Raymond Van Mil, takes his partying very seriously indeed. He’s been capturing creatures of the night on Polaroid film on the Amsterdam scene for years. He spilled his top 3 photography tips to help you capture party guests at their best. Take it away, Raymond.

01

Bring out their bright side.

"It’s hard to smile at someone hiding behind a Polaroid camera, so it’s a good idea to take it away for a few seconds to get them comfortable. Roughly frame the photo first, drop the camera down to connect with them, and when you get the reaction you want, bring the camera up and hit that button."

02

Make them shine.

"The background matters. You don't want something too distracting. Find either a neutral background or one that works with the person you’re shooting."

03

Get amongst it.

"If you want to shoot people dancing, patience is key. Relax and wait for the right moment and angle. You don't have to use the viewfinder. Just point the camera in the center of the action."
